U2 Unveils New Songs and Much More in Turin

U2 delivered a lot more than pizza to their fans Friday night in Turin, Italy.
After a protracted absence from the stage – lengthened by the untimely postponement of the band’s Summer U.S. leg – the 360 Degrees tour finally got rolling again with a 24-song set that, as had been hoped for by fans in the days leading up to show, featured the debut of two brand-new songs.
“North Star” – a slow, acoustic guitar-driven number with a romantic chorus – and “Glastonbury”, an up-tempo rocker, marked the first time since a show in Antwerp on August 6th, 2001, that the band had debuted an unreleased song at a live show.
Tweets from the venue seemed to indicate that Bono was in fine form and fully recovered from the back injury that sidelined U.S. dates for areas missed by the band in ’09; those fans will still have to wait another year to catch a glimpse of 360, but for tonight, the glory was all Turin’s.
In addition to the new songs, the set featured tour debuts for “Miss Sarajevo” (last performed on the Vertigo tour), and “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me”, last performed way back on March 21st, 1998, during the final show of the PopMart tour in Johannesburg, South Africa. Perhaps as a nod to that, the band also threw in a snippet of “Discotheque”, its first appearance in a setlist since Vertigo, and its first appearance ever in snippet form.
Oh, you’d like more? There was also a brand-new guitar intro – currently christened as the “Return of the Stingray Guitar” intro – and a new screen video featuring fans with messages written on their hands, culled from thousands of entries sent to U2.com.
The tour continues Tuesday in Frankfurt, Germany.
