Review: The Editors Rock and Redeem in Nashville*

By Shaun Rainone
2008.1

Coming to Tennessee from across the pond, the Editors took Nashville by storm on an early January night. Watching with wide open eyes, I discovered this band in a new context.

On the second North American tour to support the strong, sophomore sleeper CD of 2007 An End Has A Start, the band proved worthy to claim this new era of well-articulated rock anthems. In this, the band is both blessed and cursed to follow some rather large footsteps. With a strong live performance, all of the comparisons and influences came alive, from U2 to Interpol to Joy Division to Depeche Mode.

The entertaining live show supports the Editors’ ascension. From listening to the album to seeing the band live, fans can see the emotion Tom Smith invests in his lyrics, singing from the heart. This potent edge of feeling gives comfort to the audience, a sense of satisfaction that not a lot of bands can offer. The lyrics ride close to a rim that balances rebellion and redemption, connecting with the crowd in a collective friendship that defies the cynical notions that preoccupy other bands.

Behind Tom Smith’s charismatic presence, the band caught his back by controlling a killer sound. Ed Lay rocked the drums while Russell Leetch pumped the bass. Guitarist Chris Urbanowicz complimented Smith’s vocals with deeply chilling riffs. Filling up a stage and a venue and impressing a young crowd that draws from both pop and indy backgrounds, the Editors carefully and passionately use the live show to build and keep a growing fan base.

Editors' tour of North America continues until February 9. For more information, please visit: http://www.editorsofficial.com/
